A Burden of Choice is a Young Adult Science Fiction/Paranormal story with a touch of romance, told in the third person by the two lead protagonists, Amelia and Lee.
Amelia is a high school student whose biggest concern is eating the frozen food her parents leave her and her sister when they leave for Germany for four weeks....Until she gets dragged to a party she does not want to go to. That's when life as she knows it turns upside down and inside out.
When Amelia first meets Lee, she's not sure what she thinks of him. He's cute, but he shows no emotions at all. What's wrong with him? she wonders. And she wonders this throughout a good portion of the story.
But he has his reasons - and the author presents them at just the right time.
Stefan Ellery's characters are three-dimensional and realistic. Character development occurs in not only the two lead characters, but the supporting characters as well - especially with the comical baby-sitter that was paid to watch the teenager and her twelve-year old sister for the duration of Amelia's parents trip.
The author's choice of using an old stone church as the backdrop to the paranormal events provides the perfect atmosphere - irony at its best.
A Burden of Choice is a story that entertains, intrigues, and has you not knowing where the next page is going to take you. I don't know if it is because I am new to science fiction or it was the author's intent, but I could not once expect what would happen next.
